The Blue Balloon

The little girl pointedly looked
At the blue balloon..
"Mummy, mummy..
Get me that blue balloon, will you?"
"No, my darling, not today!"

The mother fed the little girl
The simple piece of roti and sabjee
"Hmmn.. tasty.. how do you make it?"
Said the little one, and smiled..
The mother smiled to herself
At the little one's innocence

"So did the Prince save her?"
Asked the little girl,
with an involved anticipation..
And the mother resumed to the story..

By the time the story finished
The little one was already dozing
With a pleased sleepy head.
The mother ensured she slept
And tiptoed to the kitchen.

Taking the brass tin that stored
Her fortune of 10s and 5s and 2s and 1s..
She let go a silent tear..
She had to educate her little daughter
And feed her full, thrice a day..
Dress her neat and teach her good..

She couldn't afford a blue balloon..
Because she never could let her little one
Have the tragic sorrow of
not being able to afford
A blue balloon for her daughter..
